Helen Sanders describes her upbringing as “Southern Dysfunctional.” She was born in Memphis but reared in the small Mississippi Delta town of Rich by her paternal aunt and the aunt’s daughter and husband. During her early childhood, the household became a revolving door of various Northern relatives and friends who would drop in on their way to winter homes in Florida. These relatives and friends made a deep impression on Sanders and they often appear in her stories and novels. After graduating from high school, Sanders attended Mississippi State College for Women (now MUW) where she majored in English and minored in Psychology. She became fascinated with the inner workings of the human on the back burner. When her daughter went off to college, she returned once again to her passion for writing and began working on her first novel. Once she retired from teaching she devoted her time to completing the novel and it was published several years later.
These days Sanders’s main interests in addition to writing are her daughter’s four children. Sanders and her husband live in the house in which she grew up along with a host of pets. She is an avid Mississippi State and New York Yankee fan. She has completed her second novel and is working on a third one.
